With macOS Catalina, PlayStation and Xbox controllers have become compatible. More recently, Apple has added gamepads as well nintendonintendo to the list. The process is relatively simple and will require no additional cables or accessories, just a connection BluetoothBluetooth functional. If you already own a game console, using the controller is a good way to save money while ensuring good gaming comfort.

Which controllers are compatible with macOS?

Unfortunately not all controllers are compatible with Apple computers. Here are the supported controllers according to the Californian manufacturer:

  • Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (model 1708);
  • Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller;
  • Xbox Adaptive Controller;
  • Wireless controller for Xbox Series S and Series X;
  • PlayStation DualShock 4 wireless controller;
  • PlayStation 5 DualSense wireless controller;
  • Nintendo Switch Pro controllers;
  • Joy-con for Nintendo Switch;
  • other controllers with MFi certification.

Pairing a DualShock 4/DualSense

1. Press and hold the PlayStation Button and the Share Button to put your controller into pairing mode.
2. On your Mac, access Bluetooth settings from the Bluetooth drop-down menu in the menu bar or in System Preferences.
3. In the Bluetooth settings device list, find the displayed “Wireless Controller”.
4. Click the Connect button.

Pair an Xbox Wireless Controller

1. Turn on your Xbox controller.
2. Press and hold the pairing button on the top edge of the controller until the Xbox logo flashes rapidly.
3. Go to your Mac’s Bluetooth settings and find the Xbox Wireless Controller in the device list.
4. Click the Connect button.

Pair your Switch Pro controller or Joy-Cons

1. Make sure the Nintendo Switch is turned off.
2. On your Mac, open Bluetooth Preferences.
3. Press and hold the Bluetooth pairing button located next to the charging port.
4. The controller enters pairing mode when all four of them LEDsLEDs they flash rhythmically.
5. The Mac should find the controller as “Controller Pro”. Click Connect.
