IBM Cloud announces major price increases across the board

IBM is reportedly set to raise prices for its cloud products starting next year, and the situation doesn’t look good for budget-conscious customers.

A new Post to GitHub uncovered a series of hikes with effective hikes reaching 7.5% in some areas amid sector-wide price hikes.

According to the page, the new increases will apply Bare metal Servers, virtual server instances, file and block storage, and network infrastructure, for both Classic and VPC offerings. The increases are also applicable to Cloud Object Storage in Sรฃo Paulo.

In the most extreme case, Sรฃo Paulo in Brazil is now registering a new increase of 29% from the previous 20%. Osaka, Singapore, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Madrid, Milan, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Montreal and Toronto will also see quite significant increases.

Dallas, San Jose and Washington do not see any increases, as they are all US cities on which prices are based. Chennai and Sydney are two other exceptions that are not seeing any increase.

In addition, IBM also reported a 25% increase for Accelerated Archive storage and a 26% increase for Deep Archive storage.

Away from Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), IBM’s Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) prices are set to rise 3% globally. The firm says this will cover things like security, among other aspects.

With the changes expected to take effect January 1, 2024, IBM customers have every right to be dissatisfied, but they’re not alone. Many of the industry giants, including AWS, have had to adjust their prices in recent months.

While companies will inevitably have to pass some growing costs on to customers, some analysts have suggested they might not be too concerned about improvements because many customers would rather stay than face the tremendous pain of migration. Microsoft has come under scrutiny in recent months for its alleged anti-competitive nature in making it difficult and costly for customers to depart.
