New Disney Plus Movies: July 2023

Knight

Release date: July 26th

Based on real life events, Knight tells the story of the French-Caribbean musician Joseph Bologne de Saint-Georges. A biracial Creole man of color, Bologne de Saint-Georges has been widely recognized as the first world-renowned classical composer of African descent.

The period biopic, starring Kelvin Harrison Jr (The Chicago 7 trial) as the titular character, is lower than aa Hamiltonclone of what you might expect. It’s not a rousing three-hour stage show filmed for Disney Plus. Instead, it’s a film in every sense of the word, charting Bologne de Saint-Georges’ rise from working-class plantation background to one of the most gifted musicians and all-time famous.

Despite the lack of marketing in late 2022 (and subsequent small box office receipts), Knight it was reviewed positively by critics upon release. Disney Plus users looking for something different to stream this weekend, then, should look no further.

The Incredible Hulk

Release date: June 16th

15 years after its theatrical debut (and nearly four years since Disney Plus launched as a platform), the second MCU film has joined its siblings on Disney’s main streamer.

That’s right, from 2008 The Incredible Hulk raided Disney Plus. Until now, Marvel couldn’t add him to the streamer’s video library since Universal held the rights to the character. Now that this deal has ended, they’re free to add the only Hulk solo film in the MCU to the platform.

Fans familiar with Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut, however, won’t find current Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo in this film. In 2008, Marvel instead cast Edward Norton as Bruce Banner/his green-skinned, angry alter ego. However, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has replaced Norton with Ruffalo since 2012 avengers onward (Norton also reportedly didn’t want to return), which is why the character just doesn’t look like what it used to be.

Anyway, long story short: if you’ve been waiting The Incredible Hulk to join disney plus, today is your lucky day. We’re getting closer to having every MCU movie on Disney’s main streamer, guys!
